Autumn in the Lake District

With half-term fast approaching and Autumn in full flow the Lake District is the perfect location for a family retreat. Aside from being a prime location for cycling, hiking, water sports and boating, Lake Windermere and its surrounding environs offer a vast array of winter-friendly activities for adults and kids alike - the perfect solution for when the weather gets a little too ‘fresh’.

  1. Lakeland Motor Museum.
Based at Haverthwaite Railway Station the Museum houses a collection of 30,000 exhibits including 140 Classic cars and motorbikes, all carefully assembled over 50 years. You can travel from the Museum to Lakeside on The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway where you can visit the Aquarium of the Lakes and take a cruise to Bowness or Ambleside. Combined tickets may be purchased for the Steam Train and Lake Cruises.

  2. Aquarium of the Lakes
On the shores of Lake Windermere, the Aquarium of the Lakes offers an aquarium experience with a difference. With activities ranging from rainforest meet and greets with creepy crawlies and an otter talk and feed, the Aquarium of the Lakes provides an educational focus for all ages.
Just outside the Aquarium you can catch a Windermere Lake Cruise to Bowness or Ambleside or you can spend the rest of the day on and around the Lake with the Freedom of the Lake Ticket. Although the weather may be cooler the scenery around Lake Windermere is truly stunning at this time of year.

  3. Beatrix Potter Gallery

Why not take a trip to the National Trust's Beatrix Potter Gallery during your trip and educate the clan about the golden era of Peter Rabbit? With an annual changeover in the exhibition's focus, there is always something new to see and learn about these much loved children’s tales. With children’s quiz sheets and goody bags on offer, the gallery boasts a fun day out for adults and kids alike.
