If you haven't managed to get away this year, it's not too late. How about a Bank Holiday escape to the beautiful Lake District to wrap up your summer in style?
If you want to escape the big urban events that go on over August Bank Holiday, like the Reading and Leeds festivals or the Notting Hill Carnival, the Lakes offer a peaceful retreat – but there's still lots going on.
If you're a tough runner, for example, the St Begas Ultra on 29th August covers 36 challenging miles to St Bees after heading off from the shores of Lake Bassenthwaite near Keswick.
If you love nothing but a hound dog, Patterdale Dog Day and the Wigton Dog Agility Show take place on the same day, as does Dufton Agricultural Show, about an hour's drive from Windermere.
Meanwhile, the Keswick Show is a Bank Holiday Monday favourite. It showcases everything from livestock and pets to home baking and crafts – not to mention Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling!
On the Sunday, Grasmere shows off a host of regional sporting trials, including local wrestling, hound trailing and fell running, at Grasmere Sports 2015.
Finally, if you're staying in Windermere and are happy to venture further afield the Silloth Carnival, held on Bank Holiday Monday, is about an hour's drive away through stunning countryside.
Looking for a bed and breakfast in Windermere for your stay? At the Hawksmoor Lakeland Guest House, we offer a walking and cycling friendly hotel that's well placed for everything the region has to offer, and all the events mentioned above.
Book your Lake District B & B accommodation with us early – we're always busy in late August.
