Discover the Windermere West Shore Cycle Trail!"It's got to be seen to be believed"

Whether you're an avid cyclist or are simply keen to discover the natural wonders of the Lake District, there are numerous cycle trails that you can explore during your stay at our bed and breakfast in Windermere. At the Hawksmoor Lakeland Guest House, we have found that one of the most popular routes is the four mile Windermere West Shore Cycle Trail that traverses calm, traffic-free bridleways. This cycle trail is easily accessible from Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere via ferry and enables you to take in some breathtaking views of Lake Windermere.

Upon disembarking from the Windermere car ferry, you can begin the Windermere West Shore Cycle Trail by following the blue cycle-way signs that will lead you past Claife Station and towards Harrow Slack car park. From here, the trail will lead you along a tarmac route through verdant open fields until you meet a cattle grid gate whereupon the road will shift into a wider woodland trail.

After a few steep climbs and descents you will emerge from this woodland trail at a Belle Grange sign post where a bridleway turns off to the left. Ignore this bridleway and continue to follow the main track towards High Wray which will eventually lead you through Red Nab car park and a tarmac road on your way towards Wray Castle.

While on your way to this historical site, your track will follow the lake's shores for roughly 1.6km; thereby allowing you to marvel at the sheer natural wonder that is Lake Windermere. Even as the track begins to turns uphill and away from the lake, you will still be able to enjoy awe-inspiring views of the landscape as well as glimpsing the majestic Dower House Gatehouse on your right.

At this point you can choose whether to carry cycling on towards Wray Castle, stop to enjoy a picnic or retrace your steps back to the car ferry. You could even catch the Bike Boat from Wray Jetty which will take you to the Brockhole Lake District Visitor Centre. From here, you can either catch a bus to Windermere or cycle back to your Lake District B and B accommodation at your leisure. The choice is yours!
