At Hawksmoor Lakeland Guest House, we welcome cyclists with open arms and are known far and wide as a cyclist friendly hotel in Windermere. We love chatting to our guest about their cycling adventures, but one route that comes up again and again with experienced cyclists is the Grizedale Getaway, which offers a challenging trek yet rewarding scenery and attractions along the way.
This seven mile ride takes around three hours to complete, though many cyclists prefer to make a day of it and stop off regularly throughout the route. The ride starts at Grizedale Visitor Centre and works its way through the beautiful Grizedale Forest, passing Juniper Tarn along the way. You can expect to see some incredible views of Ambleside as you head towards Hawskead, which is the perfect spot for a rest and some refreshments.
Hawkshead is home to Beatrix Potter's Gallery, so if you're making this journey with kids we highly recommend you take them in to explore! Alternatively, there are pubs and cafes to drop into for a quick break; we love the Poppi Red cafe and their delicious homemade cakes.
After your break it's onwards along the route, where you'll pass Hawkshead Trout Farm, some lovely views of Esthwaite Water and cycle through woodlands and meadows before reaching Windermere and Ferry House, where you can board a ferry and enjoy a relaxing boat ride across to the other side of Windermere.
Fancy the Grizedale Getaway on your next visit to the Lake District? Bring your bike and give it a go! We have a secure cycling shed and boot room for our guests, and you're bound to meet fellow cyclists to share stories of your Grizedale adventures with.
